9 Design Trends of 2019
Spring is always a wonderful season for change. Many homeowners find this an ideal time to redecorate or renovate their home. Maybe it’s been awhile since you’ve made any updates or you feel recently inspired. Either way, I have a list you must read of 9 design trends that are taking over 2019.
1 | FULL-TILE BACKSPLASH FEATURE WALL
Attention-grabbing backsplash is not a new trend in beautifully designed homes. It is however, a recent trend for designers to take these tiled walls from counter top to ceiling creating a striking feature wall. With the growing popularity of open floor plans, kitchens are on display more than ever and often serve as a focal point on the main floor. By giving your kitchen a full-tile featured wall, you give something for your visitors to draw their eyes to. The best part? It's a relatively inexpensive way to make your kitchen look fabulous.
2 | WINDOW WALLS
Cabinet design has come a long way over the years. As the use of cabinet space becomes smarter, the need for an excess amount of cabinets decreases. Because of this, homeowners are finding themselves with extra space and opting for less cabinets and more windows. Not only does it bring more natural light into your kitchen, but it also makes it appear larger and more open.
3 | WOOD ON WOOD
Not a particularly foreign concept to the Pacific Northwest, wood adds both warmth and character to a home. Wood also happens to pair well with white and grays which are two of the most popular colors for kitchen cabinets and walls. The soothing and inviting atmosphere has most recently been requested in medium-tone woods versus dark or light ones we have seen in previous decades. Goodbye cherry wood!
4 | CREAM-COLORED CABINETS
White is still, and will most likely remain, one of the most popular choices for cabinet color. Nevertheless, there is no rule saying it needs to be stark white. Some of the most fabulous kitchens are opting for a cream-colored white to feel warmer, cozier, and more inviting. This is not an easy choice as some paint companies offer more than 150 varieties of white paint, but many retailers offer experts who can help you find the right tone. Paired with other warm finishes like wood, cream cabinets create a calm and serene feel.
5 | CUSTOM DRAWER INSERTS IN AN UNEXPECTED COLOR OR STAIN
Custom drawer inserts with an unexpected color have gained popularity when creating the kitchen budget — and for good reason! Designers often recommend that homeowners splurge on items that they will be interacting with frequently such as cabinet hardware. But why stop there? If you think about it, these are probably the most used drawers in our home and having them both stylish and functional will make for a splurge you won’t regret.
6 | A NEW TAKE ON KITCHEN ISLANDS
Kitchen islands are a desired feature for most homeowners. With their consistent popularity, it’s about time we finally started rethinking this staple feature in our homes. The standard shape for kitchen islands has typically always been rectangular and while this might work for most kitchens, not all kitchens are created equal. Sometimes the rectangular shape isn’t actually the best design for your kitchen layout. Consider a more free-form shape that can open up better paths to your connecting rooms or create more work and storage space. Maybe you’re happy with the rectangular shape of your island. Why not try looking into some of the new features islands offer such as USB charging ports or nooks with pet feeding stations for your furry family member? A kitchen island is there to serve you and make your kitchen more practical and functional — take advantage of this and design it to suit your personal needs.
7 | FOCAL POINT BATHTUBS
Whether to keep a separate tub for soaking is a decision that homeowners undergoing a remodel are often faced with. If you are short on space, it might be one of the items to go. However, if you’re one of those people who couldn’t go without your weekly soak, creating a separate space for this bathroom feature will result in more of a spa-like environment. Additionally, it will increase functionality as it will be out of the way from features used daily. Win!
8 | DRYING STATION
Fewer things convey luxury in a bathroom more than a designated drying station. If you have the space, a linen closet, built-in bench, and drainable platform create a luxurious spa-like environment that you can indulge in everyday.
9 | CURVY FURNITURE
Gone are the days of big, boxy sofas. They may have a place in your bonus room or basement but 2019 is putting the importance on the warmth and intimacy a well-designed living room can bring, and this means sofas and chairs becoming more curvaceous. Curvy sofas have usually been reserved for formal sitting rooms but by bringing them into the living room you can share a space that creates an inviting environment for guests, friends and family to mingle.
